I love a good book. More so when I am on the road and travelling. There is something special about laying in a hammock with a cup of tea and a book.. or diving into a book on a long bus ride.
These stories below, either fiction or true, have given warm feelings and inspiration to me during my travels. Maybe they will do the same for you too!
Here are some of my favourite books to read while travelling:
1. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

I was recommended The Alchemist many times before I actually read it. Paulo is a beautiful writer who takes you on a journey across Europe and your heart. A must read, and one to be loved by all.
2. Animal Farm – George Orwell

When I picked up this book I didn’t expect it to be a literal farm with animals. The dynamic and hierarchy are amusing and symbolic of the world we live in. A short and entertaining read with loveable characters.
3. The Call of The Wild – Jack London

Jack London is one of my absolute favourite authors. His book The Call of The Wild is rich in detail and on my cannot put down list. Following the life of a dog in the Canadian northern wilderness and the call back to his wild.
4. The Art Of Leaving – Ayelet Tsabari

A memoir about a girl who grew up in Israel, and her worldly travels through Asia and Canada. Funny with some very heartfelt moments.
5. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Lewis Carrol

Illustrated by John Tenniel, this magical book is whack from start to finish. A well known and much loved story, you are dragged on a wild ride of adventure through Wonderland with Alice.
If you own a kindle, you can download Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for free!
6. Wild – Cheryl Strayed

Set on the Pacific Crest Trail in western USA, it is more of a self discovery journey than a hiking book. Cheryl overcomes the loss of her mother and her past demons in this gripping novel.
6. The Tomorrow Series – John Marsden

Not one, but a seven book series. The Tomorrow Series chronicles the lives of a group of Aussie teenagers during a fictional war. I have read this series twice and loved it just as much as the first time. The adventure and survivalist nature make for an exciting read with memorable and loveable characters.
7. Between Two Kingdoms – Suleika Jaouad

A beautifully written memoir that doesn’t hold back. You are taken through the intimacies of cancer and the recovery and life building that comes after.
8. Touching the Void – Joe Simpson

Set in the stunning Cordillera Huayhuash in Peru, I was actually on a hiking trip in this mountain range when I read the book. Incredibly gripping with some dark humour twisted throughout.
9. Lost in the Jungle – Yossi Ghinsberg

The incredible story told in the first person by Yossi of his time lost in the Bolivian Amazon. A true survivalist story, they even made it into a movie with Daniel Radcliffe.
10. The Lost Flowers or Alice Hart – Holly Ringland

My Mum recommended this book to me, and I really loved it. There are so many layers to it, exploring the different forms of love and the many heartbreaks that can come with them. I also loved it because it is set in Australia with a strong focus on the native plants there.
Thanks for reading some of my books to read while travelling recommendations. There is a sense of adventure in all of these books, which I find matches well with time spent on the road.
